Below we have put together a handy guide looking at the points you should consider when choosing the best artificial grass for your dog or other pets. We will also discuss why our artificial grass is low maintenance and easy to clean and we’ve even included some top tips to consider when installing artificial grass for dogs.
Why is artificial grass suitable for dogs and pets?
No stains and drains
Unfortunately, the high acidity of a dog’s urine will repeatedly and permanently burn natural grass, which will result in a brown and patchy lawn all year round, no matter how often you hose it down or reseed it. However, installing artificial grass will mean that you will not encounter the problem any more, as it is produced with large drainage holes to allow urine to pass through it and is made using the highest quality materials meaning your pets urine will not stain or burn the artificial grass.
Durable and Versatile
Our pet-friendly artificial grass is highly versatile. This means that, you can use it in other parts of your home and not just in the garden. We have had customers using our artificial grass in animal day care centres, pets cages and playrooms. In addition to our artificial grasses versatility, it is also super and able to withstand the rough and tumbles of pets playing.
Did you know, most dogs dig because they smell soil? So, switching to an artificial lawn removes soil from the equation, therefore acting as a deterrent for digging dogs in your garden!
Low maintenance and easy to clean
Artificial grass for dogs means cleaning up your pets business is easy. As mentioned earlier, all our artificial grass is designed with drainage holes. When it comes to number twos, let I dry out and pick it up and dispose of it as you normally would.
Your artificial grass lawn can also simply be hosed down and if you want to sanitise your lawn to a higher standard you can use a suitable diluted disinfectant.
What is the best type of artificial grass for dogs and pets?
We would recommend going for a slightly shorter pile height grass ranging between 20-35mm as this makes it easier to clean up after your pets should they soil or urinate on the artificial grass. However, personal choice should come into your decision as well, as all of our artificial grasses are pet friendly here at DOgrass.
If your preference is to have a lawn that looks recently trimmed and freshly cut our recommendation would to be to chose a grass with a shorter pile height, such as Pooch.
However, if your preference is to have a slightly longer and softer grass we would recommend going for Esher with its 37mm pile height this would be the perfect choice for you.
Our top tips for installing artificial grass for dogs:
- NEVER use sand. Sand will absorb liquid, meaning that when your pet goes for a wee it will be absorbed and can cause your garden to smell. Our recommendation would be to use a 5mm dust aggregate such a Granite Dust.
- Install the Geotex membrane underneath your sub-base - similar to above, membrane absorbs liquid therefore we recommend installing it between the earth and sub-base bottom rather than between the sub-base top and grass.
- Secure your grass around the perimeter to ensure your pet can’t lift the edging.
Not just for dogs!
Our dog friendly astroturf is suitable for not only dogs but for all pets, including cats, rabbits and other small animals. We’ve even supplied artificial grass for tortoises in the past.
