Why does artificial grass have different heights?

Choosing the best artificial grass can be daunting. Commonly used phrases such as pile density, backing material, fibre shape, are all unfamiliar to many homeowners. With such a variety of artificial grass on the market, picking the perfect synthetic turf for your project can become a little overwhelming.

In this guide, we cover an important factor to consider when picking the best artificial grass- pile height.

What is Pile Height?

Pile height is the measured height of the artificial grass from artificial grass backing to the top of the surface fibres. Simplified, the pile height is the total height of the artificial grass blade, from the bottom of the products backing to the tip of the artificial grass.

The pile height is measured in millimetres and can range from around 10mm to 50mm+. Depending on the purpose and uses of your outdoor space, different pile heights can have different benefits depending on the desired application of the grass. Pile height between 25mm to 45mm is common, and pile less than 25mm or longer than 45mm tend to be used for sports application.

What effect can the pile height have?

Resilience
The longer the fibres the slightly quicker the artificial grass may flatten. Therefore, it’s worth considering shorter pile synthetic grasses if your intent is to use your artificial lawn regularly, as it will stay looking fresh with minimal maintenance.

Feel
Pile height is a key factor in the feel of artificial grass. Longer pile height offers greater softness while the shorter the pile height usually means the coarser and more harder wearing the synthetic turf.

Aesthetics
Choosing your artificial lawn depends on your personal taste. Some people prefer a neat, clean-cut looking grass, in which case a shorter pile will be more appealing. Others maybe prefer a more natural look; therefore, they might prefer a slightly longer pile height.
