Artificial grass has a significant benefit over traditional turf in that it requires less maintenance to keep it looking fantastic. In order to save considerable amounts of  time and money, it’s important to be aware that some artificial grass maintenance is still required.

How to Clean Artificial Grass

Clear Debris from your Lawn

When it's coming up to autumn, falling leaves and other organic debris will collect on your lawn.

It’s essential to keep on top of any leaf or debris on the lawn because if it is left unchecked, they can block the all-important drainage holes in your artificial grass and water may start collecting on the surface of the lawn. This could give rise to weeds in artificial grass and cause moss and mould growth.

A good brush with a stiff broom or even a blower will remove leaves or debris and solve this problem. Do not use a metal rake on the lawn as this will pull the artificial lawn up!

Protecting Artificial Grass from Moss

When it comes to cleaning fake grass, leaves and debris must be cleared to prevent moisture buildup. If that does happen, moss could grow. An essential part of maintaining artificial grass in autumn is protecting it against moss growth and tackling it quickly should any take hold.

The combination of shadier conditions, wetter weather and possibly more fallen debris, is a potential catalyst for moss and even mould growth.

If you do find moss starting to grow, you could treat it by doing the following:

  1. Spray with a hose with good water pressure to effectively remove the moss (do not use a jet wash on your lawn as you are likely to damage it).
  2. Use a stiff brush on the lawn to ensure that the moss is removed. You can use a power brush if you have one.
  3. Apply a water-based weed killer for artificial grass to help prevent moss from returning.

Cleaning your Artificial Lawn

When it comes to cleaning your lawn in autumn and spring, the rain will do most of the job for you. Naturally, rainwater keeps your artificial grass clean and the drainage holes clear by washing away any particles and light debris.

If you happen to have pets and find any soiling on your lawn, spot clean in these areas with a mild solution of household detergent and warm water applied with a sponge rinsed away with the hose will suffice.

Commercial artificial grass cleaner can be used, but you’ll generally find a basic cleaning solution as described above will do the job on soiled areas.

How to get weeds out of Artificial Grass

When it comes to weeds in artificial grass, they can grow directly on the surface or underneath. Surface weeds are easy to remove as they generally come from seeds carried by the wind which will land on your lawn thereby not growing through the layers below the grass. Maintenance of your artificial grass in the autumn and spring will generally keep the weeds at bay.

Weeds will grow wherever they can so check regularly and remove them.

To protect against weeds, apply a water-based weed killer for artificial grass which can be done a couple of times a year. This will help to inhibit growth.

Maintaining artificial grass in 3 easy steps

  1. Clear it from debris like leaves. You can do this with a stiff broom or a blower. Don’t use a metal rake!
  2. Get rid of moss as soon as you spot it. Spray with a hose and use a stiff brush to clean it off. You can add a water-based weed killer to prevent it from coming back.
  3. Clean your artificial lawn. If pets use it as a toilet, you can spot clean the areas with household detergent. When it comes to weeds, you can use a water-based weed killer for artificial grass.
